Alamos
Step back in time... Experience the unique old-world charm of Mexico's northernmost colonial city. Tucked into the foothills of the massive Sierra Madre Mountains, Alamos will delight your senses and restore your spirit. History, culture and the wonders of the natural world abound in and around this lovely old city ~ all just waiting to be discovered and explored.
Dense tropical deciduous forest cloaks the surrounding mountainsides providing a diverse habitat for parrots, ocelots, boa constrictors and our logo bird, the Black-throated Magpie Jay. The Sea of Cortez is only 50 miles from Alamos. Here we will cruise mangrove-lined estuaries by boat, looking for dolphins, seabirds and shorebirds.
The Alamos region is Mayo Indian country. A gentle people, the Mayo are known for their beautiful wool weavings and carved wood crafts. We will visit the Mayo village of Teachive to see the weavers work.
The cultural history of Alamos dates from the 16th century and the rich silver strikes of that era. See fine examples of Andalusian architecture, and visit some of the mansions which have been immaculately restored to their former glory.
