February 28-March 9, 1999
For Lovers of Folk Art, History and Butterflies

Venture "off the beaten path" and savor an unusual taste of Mexico in the wildly beautiful state of Michoacán. North of Mexico City, it is culturally set apart by its lush, picturesque mountainous terrain. The landscape is punctuated with many colorful villages, each specializing in a rich traditional folk art. Handsome hand-loomed fabrics, straw sculptures, unique hand-carved wooden furniture, shimmering copper, Talavera pottery, and distinctive lacquer ware all make wonderful gifts. You have been given a special invitation to Juan Torres' workshop where he makes his famous - and most unusual - catrina dolls.

Monarch
Butterfly Your trip entry and departure city, Guadalajara, is the most authentically Mexican city in the Republic. The well-known Mexican traditions of the Mexican hat dance, Mexican-style rodeo, mariachi music, and tequila were born here. There you will experience the best folkloric ballet in Mexico. In the nearby craft villages of Tlaquepaque and Tonalá you will see demonstrations of blown glass, ceramics, and papier-mâché.

Millions of Monarch Butterflies winter near Morelia, Michoacán, and you will have the opportunity to spend a day enjoying the magic beauty of their shimmering color and movement. They will personally greet you, resting on your arms and head.

Morelia, in the midst of ancient Spanish architectural elegance, has earned the reputation as one of Mexico's most intellectual and artistic centers. The oldest surviving institution of higher education in Latin America is still in operation there.

This 10-day trip package is $1965. It includes round trip airfare (Tucson to Guadalajara), all transfers, all hotels, all meals and some tips. A special bargain: both colonial cities trips for $3075 (a savings of $855/person).

Colonial and revolutionary history will come alive in San Miguel de Allende, a national monument and the cradle of Mexican Independence. San Miguel de Allende San Miguel de Allende will be our base for 5 days. One of the prettiest towns in Mexico, this colonial jewel will capture your heart. Virtually all the buildings date from the colonial era, and many hotels, shops and restaurants are housed in beautiful mansions. Known as “Santa Fe South,” San Miguel is perfectly located for meandering the cobblestone streets past musical fountains, baroque facades, wrought iron balconies, colorful patios and intricately carved wooden doors.
