April 27 - May 6, 1999
Costa Rica is the most ecologically diverse Eden in the hemisphere, with 30% of its territory set aside for protected areas. Politically and economically stable, this small country is an island of tranquillity in Central America where travelers can feel safe, relax and enjoy themselves. With the advantage of cross-country charter flights and private vans, we are able to experience the premier sites in Costa Rica. This season affords comfortable temperatures and a lack of tourist crowds.
Accompanied by a naturalist guide, we begin in the world-famous Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve at an elevation of 4,600 feet. This upscale lodge features excellent food, a giant indoor jacuzzi, and angled glass walls in the rooms which bring you breathtakingly close to the gardens. The reserve is home to 100 species of mammals and more than 320 bird species including the Resplendent Quetzal--perhaps the world's most beautiful bird.
For a change of pace, travel through the Tilarán Mountains to the active Arenal Volcano area. Soak in the Tabacón Hot Springs and take a guided tour in the Volcano National Park. The steaming volcano gives an ethereal quality to the surrounding countryside.
Flying from Arenal to the Atlantic coast, you will enter Tortuguero National Park, one of Costa Rica's greatest wilderness areas. An enjoyable stay at Tortuga Lodge awaits you with its rustic elegance and inviting river-front verandah. Behind the lodge are 21,000 acres of dense tropical rain forest with orchid- laden trees towering 200 feet above where monkey and sloths are abundant. Cruising through 50 miles of creeks and lagoons will allow sightings of kingfishers, toucans and parrots. Manatees, crocodiles, Gar, and turtles feed in the river.
A day of white water rafting on the Reventazón River caps this wonderful adventure. No previous experience is necessary with your expert river guides. An optional day in San José is available for anyone who does not wish to raft.
The 1999 package price is $2175. It includes all land, air and
water transportation in Costa Rica. All guides, entrance
fees, hotels, tips and 22 meals, are also included.
Add $700 to include round trip airfare from the U.S. to San José.
